The Inter-House Debate held on 10/12/2024

10th December 2024

The Debate Club of IVWS hosted its Inter-House Debate on the 10th of December 2024 in the school auditorium. The motion for the debate was: “The protection of Human Rights is a more important consideration than National Security” as a tribute to Human Rights Day. The Chief Guest for the event was Dr. Tania Chakravertty who currently serves as the Dean of Students’ Welfare at the Diamond Harbour Women’s University and Ms.Aatreyi Sarkar, third year student of Comparative Literature, Jadavpur University, who consented to be the Moderator. The event commenced with a prayer and lighting of the lamp by the Chief Guest, Moderator, Principal, Vice Principal, Headmistress, the two teacher mentors and the student Secretary and President. After the welcome speech by our esteemed Principal, Reshma Bhattacharya Ma’am, an introduction of our guests and a quick reflection on the debating culture, the floor was open to the debate. There were three speakers from each of the four Houses with the third speaker taking up the rebuttal questions. There were two Houses for the proposition and two for the opposition. In an intense one and half hour session, the Houses battled it out with powerful rhetoric, each trying to establish their arguments. The Moderator Ms. Aatreyi Sarkar added her own points and summed up the arguments, often stepping in when the exchange got a little passionate. After an engaging war of words, Yamuna House was declared the winner with Saranya Roy as the Best Speaker and the motion being defeated. The logo for the Debate Club and MUN was unveiled and the event ended with the vote of thanks. Thus ended a fruitful and very exciting day with the conviction of many more such debates being organised in the future.
